Distant Horizons Adventure Racing Series - 2011

22 Jul 2010 - Jason Beverley

New for 2010

Distant Horizons will be launching some new 'adventure' products to their existing portfolio of outdoor activity adventures during 2011. With extensive experience of designing, managing and running adventure challenges over many years Distant Horizons are ready to embark on extending their services and products to the Adventure Racing Market. Initially the Adventure Races that are to be offered will be within the Lake District National Park and involve outdoor activities including fell running, orienteering, mountain biking, open water swimming, canoeing, kayaking, abseiling, ascending ropes using cammed ascenders, lakeside cliff jumps, raft building, problem solving tasks and many more. Distant Horizons are taking a fresh approach to his market and offering events on a much smaller scale with fewer participants than some current events. Our aim is to minimise the impact on an given area. In addition Distant Horizons are able to provide an all-inclusive service for any given event as they already have a vast amount of equipment that enables participants to simply pay a fee which includes all of the necessary technical equipment.

Distant Horizons will be running during the winter months a series of training sessions aimed at adventure race competitors to develop their skills in some key areas such as navigation, mountain bike skills, tandem sea kayak skills, rope skills (ascent and descent) swimming and running techniques. Keep watching for further updates.

National 3 Peaks Success 3rd-4th July 2010

4 Jul 2010 - Jason Beverley

Distant Horizons organised and ran a 100% successful National 3 Peaks for a private group of 8 people for the London area during the first weekend of July. Working on a 1:4 ratio and providing all transportation, equipment, food and drinks and a high level of support, motivation and encouragement our team managed to assist the group to complete the entire ascent and descent of Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis is a brilliant time of 22hours and 57minutes. The team were ecstatic about their performance especially as the weather on the last peak (Ben Nevis) was damp and breezy but this did not stop them in their quest to complete the challenge.

It was noted that a few other teams were attempting the same challenge in the same direction as us and they had a 100% failure! Teams were turned back on Ben Nevis and not allowed to continue further whilst our group descended like baby gazelles and those team members were somewhat disgruntled at this decision being made by their mountain leader who it would appear made claims that the winds were around 70mph using his little gizmo anemometer!!! Clearly he needed it recalibrated as if the winds were indeed 70mph then our successful summit attempt would not have been feasible!  Experience, judgement and an ability to manage a group safely in a range of conditions was the key to our success on the day. Our clients had the experience of a lifetime whilst being looked after with a high level of competance of Distant Horizons quality instructional staff and guides.

Recent developments at Distant Horizons - Ullswater

15 Jun 2010 - Jason Beverley

Since the completion of our fantastic brand new technical indoor training centre at our headquarters in Watermillock in April further building work has been taking place to convert as series of existing farm buildings into a new office, toilet and shower block and also a conference/training room. These additional facilities will certainly help us bring Distant Horizons to the forefront of providing the highest quality outdoor development and training courses.

Completion is hopefully by September when we will be offering an extensive range of new courses and events giving us a very competive edge within the exisiting outdoor market. Keep watchng for further update and photographs.
