88 Teams gear up for Charity Challenge

13 Mar 2009 - Emma

*Source: News & Star* *Monday, 09 March 2009* By Chris Story MORE than 350 people will compete in a gruelling Lake District charity challenge in an attempt to raise £300,000 for worthy causes. They will walk, cycle, paddle and abseil their way through the countryside as part of an event organised by Cumbrian adventure company Distant Horizons... ...The teams will compete against each other over two weekends in June - 44 teams on each occasion - with race options including “tough” and “super-tough” in a race against the clock. The event follows on from a similar event a held in 2007 which raised £260,000 for a variety of charities. Distant Horizons, an outdoor activity supplier that uses its experience and expertise to organise adventure events, is based at Ullswater. Marketing and operations manager Jacques Shelton said: “This is going to be bigger than last time. “This is a step up and there is not just us involved. We have a lot of local suppliers working with us.” Among those using their skills to support the challenge will be the Coniston and Duddon and Furness mountain rescue teams. A number of experienced people involved in outdoor activities will also be working alongside Distant Horizons. Among the major companies entering teams into the challenge are supermarket giants Tesco, Waitrose and Sainsbury’s, as well as other well-known business names including Marks & Spencer, Ginsters, British Sugar and McDonald’s. Penrith Mountain Rescue Team was one of the charities to benefit from the 2007 event, receiving £40,000 to help replace one of its Land Rovers.
