Everest Base Camp and Gokyo Lakes Trek

13 Nov 2014 - Emma

Why not join us on a trip to the Khumbu region of Nepal and experience the magical world of awe inspiring peaks, amazing people and culture.  Trek through steep sided valleys in the footsteps of Mallory, Irvine, Hillary and Tenzing to name but a few.

Our trek starts at Lukla after an amazing mountain flight from Kathmandu, on a short take off and landing plane like a Twin Otter.  From here we follow the path to Namche Bazaar, the Sherpa capital which nestles into a natural amphitheater at 3440m, and hopefully gain your first view of Everest on the way up the hill.  After a few days acclimatising and exploring Namche we steadily head North towards Gokyo Lakes, passing through numerous Sherpa villages before arriving at the truly stunning sacred Lakes.  Breathtaking views of Everest are possible from Gokyo Ri at 5500m.  We cross the Ngozumba glacier to then cross the Cho La pass at 5420m, before dropping down onto the main Everest Base camp trail at Lobuche.  A short day walk from here you will arrive at the last habitation of Gorak Shep.  Everest Base Camp is around 3 hours round trip from here and sometimes completed on the same day.  With a very early start it is possible to ascend Kala Patthar 5550m and enjoy the sunrise over Everest, Lhotse and Nupste, which can be the highlight of the trip.  A steady descent from Gorak Shep will see you back in Lukla in only 3 days for the flight back to Kathmandu.  The entire trek uses local teahouses for all food and accommodation where you can enjoy and observe many aspects of the Buddhist culture.  The trip is being run by Jason Beverley from Distant Horizons along with Kami Nurbu Sherpa and local porters, providing you with a high quality and safe trek.
